Learn how to extract color themes, vector shapes, and font styles from images and create design elements using Adobe Capture within Adobe InDesign.

With the Capture extension within InDesign, you can capture any inspiring image and generate creative elements such as color themes, shapes, and type. Save the created elements in the Creative Cloud library, access them anytime for your projects, or create new ones.

Open Capture panel

Place an image in your InDesign document using File > Place.

Select the placed image with the Selection tool.

Right-click an image, select Extract from Image > Color Themes, Shapes, or Type.

Extract and save color themes

Generate a color palette from the image.

Customize the palette using one of the following:

  • Move the round selectors on the image.
  • Use options under Color Mood.

Select Save to CC Libraries to save the theme.

Create shapes

Convert the selected image to a vector graphic in black and white.

In the Shapes tab do the following:

  • Detail: Drag the slider to adjust the amount of detail you would like to see in the vector image.
  • Invert: Choose this option if you want to reverse the black and white areas
  • Smooth On Save: Use this option if you would like the vector image to be smoothed before saving.
  • Use the Eraser icon to delete areas of your image.

Select Save to CC Libraries to save the shapes.

Extract and match fonts from images

Identify the closest font match from Adobe Fonts for the selected text in the image. When you select a font, it's automatically activated from Adobe Fonts for use.

Isolate a letter or block of text using the crop handles.

Select the font type and use Sample Text to preview the font across different texts.

Use the Edit feature to adjust leading, tracking, font size, and style using the slider controls.

Select Save to CC Libraries to save the new font type as a character or paragraph style into your libraries.
