Learn how to move, rearrange, lock, unlock, and delete ruler guides on pages and spreads in Adobe InDesign.

Manage ruler guides to control their position, visibility, and interaction with page objects and layers.

Delete ruler guides

Select one or more guides on the page or spread.

Press Delete to remove the selected guides.

To delete all guides, right-click (Windows) or Ctrl-click (macOS) any guide, then select Delete All Guides on Spread.

Note

Guides that cannot be deleted may be locked, positioned on a parent page, or located on a locked layer.

Lock and unlock ruler guides

Select View > Grids & Guides > Lock Guides to lock or unlock all ruler guides.

Double-click a layer name in the Layers panel (Window> Layers), select or deselect Lock Guides, and select OK to lock or unlock ruler guides on a single layer

Change ruler guide stacking order

Place ruler guides behind page objects to prevent them from obscuring content while keeping them in front of the margin and column guides.

Select Edit > Preferences > Guides & Pasteboard (Windows) or InDesign > Preferences > Guides & Pasteboard (macOS).

Select Guides in Back.

Select OK.

Note

The Guides in Back setting affects all ruler guides as a single set, regardless of which layer they're on. Layer stacking order does not affect guide visibility.

Move ruler guides

Select the Selection tool or the Direct Selection tool.

Select a ruler guide and drag it to reposition it.

To move multiple guides, Shift-select the guides and drag them together.

To move guides precisely, nudge them with the arrow keys or use the Control or Transform panels

To snap a guide to the nearest ruler tick mark, hold Shift while dragging it.

To move a spread guide, drag the portion on the pasteboard.

To move guides to another page or document, select the guides, select Edit > Cut or Edit > Copy, navigate to the target page or document, and select Edit > Paste.
