Last updated on Jun 2, 2026

Learn how to swap color swatches throughout your Adobe InDesign document.

Use this procedure to replace a color throughout your document and maintain consistency. It finds all instances of a selected swatch and replaces them with another, including fills, strokes, and text.

Before you begin

Ensure the replacement swatch exists in the Swatches panel.

Open the document.

Choose Edit > Deselect All to ensure no objects are selected.

Open the Swatches (Window > Color > Swatches) panel, then select the color to replace.

Select the panel menu   icon, select Find this color.

Confirm the color in Find Color drop-down menu.

Under Change Color, choose the replacement swatch, or select New Color Swatch to create one, and then select Add.

Select Find Next to locate the first instance.

Select Change to replace it, Change All to replace all instances, or Change/Find to replace and move to the next.
