Manage hyperlinks

Learn how to edit, rename, delete, and navigate existing hyperlinks in your Adobe InDesign documents.

You can use the Hyperlinks panel to update destinations, organize links, and troubleshoot issues. The panel lists all hyperlinks, including sources and destinations such as URLs, files, pages, and text anchors.

Edit hyperlinks

Select Window > Interactive > Hyperlinks.

Select any hyperlink source from the list in the Hyperlinks panel.

Select the panel menu icon, then select Edit Hyperlink. You can also right-click any hyperlink source in your document and select Hyperlinks > Edit Hyperlink to open the Edit Hyperlink dialog box.

Update the Destination, Appearance, or Accessibility sections as needed.

To change the color or underlining of hyperlink text, edit the Hyperlink character style through Window > Styles > Character Styles.

Select OK.

Rename hyperlink sources

Select Window > Interactive > Hyperlinks.

Select the hyperlink source you want to rename from the Hyperlinks panel.

Select the panel menu icon, then select Rename Hyperlink.

Enter the new name in the Rename Hyperlink dialog box.

Select OK.

Delete hyperlinks

Select Window > Interactive > Hyperlinks.

Select one or more hyperlinks from the Hyperlinks panel.

Select the Delete selected hyperlinks icon. Deleting a hyperlink removes only the link behavior. The source text or graphic frame remains in your document with its original formatting.

Navigate to hyperlink sources

Select Window > Interactive > Hyperlinks.

Select any hyperlink from the Hyperlinks panel.

Select the panel menu icon, then select Go To Source.

Navigate to hyperlink destinations

Select Window > Interactive > Hyperlinks.

Select any hyperlink from the Hyperlinks panel.

Select the panel menu icon, then select Go To Destination.

For page or text anchor destinations within the document, InDesign jumps to that location. For external destinations, InDesign launches your default web browser or email application.

Update or reset hyperlinks

Select the text, text frame, or graphics frame that will serve as the new or updated hyperlink source.

Select Window > Interactive > Hyperlinks.

Select an existing hyperlink from the Hyperlinks panel.

Select the panel menu icon, then select one of the following:

  • Reset Hyperlink: To replace the source with your current selection.
  • Update Hyperlink: To refresh links to external documents.

Manage hyperlink destinations

Select Window > Interactive > Hyperlinks.

Select any hyperlink from the Hyperlinks panel list.

Select the panel menu icon, then select Hyperlink Destination Options.

Update the Destination and Type from the drop-down menus.

Enter a new Name to save this as a shared destination for reuse.

Select one of the following to remove destinations:

  • Delete: To remove the selected destination.
  • Delete Unused: To remove all destinations not currently linked to any source.
