Change the black overprint setting

Last updated on Jun 2, 2026

Learn how to disable automatic overprinting for the default black swatch in Adobe InDesign to knock out underlying colors during printing.

InDesign automatically overprints objects colored with the default [Black] swatch at 100%, which helps prevent misregistration of small black text and strokes over colored backgrounds. This keeps the inks underneath intact. You can turn this off if you need black objects to knock out instead. The setting applies globally to all documents and affects only the default [Black] swatch, not black tints or other black colors. For mixed behavior, duplicate the [Black] swatch and use one for overprint and one for knockout.

Select Edit > Preferences > Appearance Of Black (Windows) or InDesign > Preferences > Appearance Of Black (macOS).

Deselect Overprint [Black] Swatch at 100% to knock out black objects or select it to enable automatic overprinting.

Select OK to apply the setting.

After disabling automatic overprinting, all instances of the [Black] swatch at 100% density will knock out underlying colors by default. Any objects with manually applied overprint settings through the Attributes panel remain unchanged. The preference only controls the default behavior for the [Black] swatch.

Tip

To verify overprint behavior before printing, use the Separations Preview panel (Window > Output > Separations Preview) to preview how colors interact on individual plates.
