Crash on launch while recovering a damaged document

Last updated on Jun 2, 2026

Resolve startup crash loops in Adobe InDesign by clearing damaged recovery files.

If InDesign crashes every time you launch it after a previous crash, a damaged recovery file may be causing the issue. InDesign attempts to reopen the recovery data at startup, which can cause the same crash to occur repeatedly.

You may see the splash screen briefly before InDesign closes again.

Damaged or corrupted recovery file

Close InDesign.

Delete the contents of the InDesign recovery folder C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Adobe\InDesign\<version>\<language>\Caches\InDesign Recovery (Windows) or /Users/<username>/Library/Caches/Adobe InDesign/<version>/<language>/InDesign Recovery (macOS).

Launch InDesign again.

If InDesign opens normally, one of the recovery files was damaged.

If the problem persists, you can check the recovery folder location in InDesign by selecting Edit > Preferences > File Handling (Windows) or InDesign > Preferences > File Handling (macOS), and then reviewing the document recovery path.
