View and resolve preflight errors

Last updated on Jun 2, 2026

Learn how to view preflight error lists and info panels to identify and fix Adobe InDesign document issues before printing.

Preflight errors appear in organized categories within the Preflight panel when live preflighting is active. The panel groups errors by category and provides contextual information for each issue.

Navigate and identify errors

Select Window > Output > Preflight.

Review the error categories listed in the panel.

Select the arrow icon next to a category to expand it and view specific errors.

Select an error row to view details in the Info section at the end of the error list. The Info section provides context-specific guidance for each selected error. This information explains why the issue occurs and suggests corrective actions based on the error type.

Review the description and suggested solutions.

Locate and view problem items

Select Window > Output > Preflight.

Identify the error you want to address in the error list.

Select the page number in the Page column. InDesign navigates to the page and highlights the item containing the error.

Examine the item to understand the specific issue causing the error.

When viewing errors, note that issues in overset text, hidden conditions, or notes don’t appear in the error list. Deleted text still available in tracked changes is also ignored. Parent page items with errors appear only once in the list, even though the error occurs on every page that uses that parent.

Note

Errors in nonprinting page items, items on the pasteboard, or items on hidden or nonprinting layers appear in the error list only if the appropriate options are selected in the Preflight Options dialog box.

Fix errors and verify resolution

Select Window > Output > Preflight.

Select the error you want to address in the error list.

Apply the correction suggested in the Info section. If the error involves a design element like a style or swatch, correct the source element rather than individual instances.

Monitor the error list to verify the error disappears after applying the fix.

Continue addressing remaining errors using the same process.

Review error reports

Select Window > Output > Preflight.

Select the panel menu icon and then select Save Report.

Navigate to the folder you want to save the preflight error report in the Save Preflight Report dialog box.

Select the preferred Format from .pdf or .txt and enter the Save As name.

Select Save. The report includes error details, document statistics, profile information, and timestamps.

For a complete inventory of document resources, including fonts, inks, links, and other elements beyond preflight errors, use the Package feature instead. Access this by selecting File > Package.
