Lock or unlock layers

Last updated on Jun 2, 2026

Learn how to use layer locking to prevent accidental edits while working on complex documents in Adobe InDesign.

Locked layers prevent direct selection and editing of their objects. This helps protect background elements, templates, or approved content while you work on other parts of the document. Locking a layer doesn’t block indirect changes, such as edits to shared swatches. Threaded text also continues to reflow across locked and unlocked layers. To fully prevent all changes, including indirect ones, select Preferences > General and select Prevent Selection of Locked Objects.

Select Window > Layers.

Select the empty square in the second column from the left next to the layer name to lock a layer.

Select the lock   icon next to a layer name to unlock it.

Alt-click (Windows) or Option-click (macOS) the square in the second column next to a layer to lock all layers except that one. To lock individual objects within layers, select Object > Lock.

Select the Layers panel menu  icon, then select Unlock All Layers to unlock all layers simultaneously.
