Learn how to apply strokes and fills to table cells in Adobe InDesign to control borders and background formatting.

Add strokes and fills to table cells in InDesign using the Cell Options, the Stroke panel, or the Swatches panel. These methods help format individual cells or groups of cells for better readability and visual separation.

Add strokes and fills using Cell Options

Select the cells using the Type  tool. To format header or footer rows, select the cells at the beginning of the table.

Select Table > Cell Options > Strokes and Fills.

Select lines in the proxy preview area to format. Selected lines appear blue and deselected lines appear gray.

Double-click an outside edge to select the outer border or double-click an inside line to select interior lines. Triple-click to select or deselect all lines.

Set Cell Stroke and Cell Fill properties.

Select Overprint Stroke or Overprint Fill if needed.

Select OK.

Add a stroke to cells using the Stroke panel

Select the cells using the Type  tool.

Select Window > Stroke.

Select lines in the proxy preview area.

In the Tools panel, select the Formatting affects container  tool.

Specify the Weight and Type in the Stroke panel.

Add a fill to cells using the Swatches panel

Select the cells using the Type  tool.

Select Window > Color > Swatches.

In the Tools panel, select the Formatting affects container tool, then select a color from the Swatches panel.

Add a fill to cells using the Gradient panel

Select the cells using the Type  tool.

Select Window > Color > Gradient.

In the Tools panel, select the Formatting affects container tool, then select a color from the Swatches (Window > Color > Swatches) panel.

Select Gradient Ramp to apply a gradient to the selected cells, then adjust the gradient settings as required.
