Change page position on media

Last updated on Jun 2, 2026

Learn how to adjust where document pages appear on printed sheets using offset and gap settings in Adobe InDesign.

When printing InDesign documents, you can control page placement on the media using Offset and Gap. Offset shifts the page horizontally, while Gap determines the amount of blank space between successive pages on a roll.

These options are mainly used with PostScript devices that support custom paper sizes. For standard paper sizes, pages are centered automatically.

Select File > Print to open the Print dialog box.

Select PostScript® File from the Printer menu.

In the Setup section, select Custom from the Paper Size menu.

Custom paper sizes for non-PostScript printers aren’t available in the InDesign Print dialog box. To set them, select Setup (Windows), Printer, or Page Setup (macOS) to open the printer driver settings.

If Custom doesn't appear, your selected PPD doesn't support custom paper sizes.

For Width and Height, do one of the following:

  • Select Auto to let InDesign determine the smallest paper size needed for the document.
  • Enter new values in the Width and Height fields to use a larger paper size.

The maximum paper dimensions and imageable area vary by output device and are defined in the selected PPD file.

In the Offset field, enter a measurement value to shift your page away from the left edge of the imageable area.

Enter a value in the Gap field to specify spacing between pages on continuous media.

Select Transverse to rotate both the media and page content 90 degrees.

Review the preview in the lower-left corner to ensure there’s enough space for printer marks, bleed, and slug areas.

Select Save.
