Access denied errors

Last updated on Jun 2, 2026

Resolve file access problems by checking permissions, file locks, network connections, and linked assets in Adobe InDesign.

Access to the file, folder, or network location is restricted

You don't have permission to access the file, folder, or network location where the document is stored. You may see an Access denied message when opening a document, saving changes, or relinking files.

Right-click the file or folder, and then select Properties (Windows) or Get Info (macOS).

Review the Security tab (Windows) or the Sharing & Permissions section (macOS).

Confirm that your account has Read and Write access.

If needed, contact your system administrator or the file owner to request access.

If the file is stored on a network drive, confirm that you are connected and signed in.

Try saving the file to a local folder where you have write access. If the file opens or saves successfully in the new location, the original location likely has permission restrictions.

File locked by InDesign session or operating system

Confirm that the file is not open in another copy of InDesign.

Look for an .idlk file in the same folder as the InDesign document.

If no one else is using the document, delete the .idlk file.

Windows: Right-click the file, select Properties, and clear the Read-only option.

macOS: Select the file, and then select File > Get Info, and deselect the Locked option.

Restart the system to release any system-level file locks.

Network drives and cloud storage connections issue

Confirm that your network connection is stable.

Verify that mapped network drives are connected and accessible.

Open the file location in File Explorer or Finder to confirm direct access.

If you use cloud storage such as Dropbox, OneDrive, or Google Drive, make sure the file is fully synced.

Copy the file to your local drive, and then open it from there. If the file works from a local folder, the issue is related to the network or cloud location.

Missing, moved, or restricted linked graphics and fonts

Open the Links panel by selecting Window > Links (Ctrl + Shift + D).

Look for missing or modified links.

Right-click the affected link, and then select Relink from the drop-down menu.

Browse to a location that contains the linked file.

Confirm that the required fonts are installed or activated through Adobe Fonts.

Select File > Package to collect the document and its assets into one folder.
