Replace characters with glyphs

Last updated on Jun 2, 2026

Learn how to swap characters with alternate forms via the context menu in Adobe InDesign.

When a character has alternate glyphs available, InDesign displays an on-context menu showing those alternates.

Use the Type tool to select a single character in your text frame.

Hover your pointer over the blue underline that appears beneath the character to display the on-context menu showing available alternates.

Select the alternate glyph you want to use to replace the selected character.

If the character has more than five alternates, select the arrow at the end of the on-context menu to open the full Glyphs (Type > Glyphs) panel.

Double-click the alternate glyph you want to use.
