Convert book files from previous InDesign versions

Last updated on Jun 2, 2026

Learn how to use format conversion to open and work with legacy book files in current Adobe InDesign versions.

When you open a book file created in an earlier version of InDesign, the application automatically updates the book file (.indb) for your current version. This update applies only to the book container and ensures all book features function correctly. Individual documents convert when you synchronize, update page numbering, or package the book. During this process, you can choose whether to preserve or overwrite the original files.

Conversion is necessary when collaborating across different InDesign versions or preparing projects for future use. Because older InDesign versions cannot open newer book files, sharing backward requires exporting documents to IDML.

Open and save the legacy book file

Select File > Open.

Find the book file created in the previous InDesign version and select Open. If you saved the documents in the book in older formats, a warning message appears.

Select the panel menu icon and then select Save Book As.

Set a new name for the converted book file to preserve the original or keep the same name to overwrite it.

Select Save. The book file updates to the current InDesign format, while individual documents remain in their original format until converted.

Convert documents within the book

Open the converted book file.

Select the Book panel menu icon and then select or deselect Automatic Document Conversion based on your workflow. If you selected Automatic Document Conversion, InDesign automatically converts and overwrites each document, else, the Save As dialog box appears for each document, letting you preserve the originals or overwrite them.

To convert all documents in the book, select Update Numbering > Update All Numbers from the panel menu.

Tip

Alternatively, select the panel menu icon, then select Synchronize Book to trigger document conversion and apply consistent styles across all book documents.
