Create hidden buttons with rollover effects in InDesign using appearance states. The Normal state remains empty while the Rollover state displays content. This helps reveal information on interaction without affecting the layout.

Create a hidden button with image rollover

Select the image with no border or fill.

Open Window > Interactive > Buttons and Forms.

Choose Normal in the Appearance section to convert the image to a button, and Rollover to activate the image.

Select Normal, then select the image using the Direct Selection tool and remove the image.

Set up source and target buttons

Select the source button.

Open Window > Interactive > Buttons and Forms.

Set Hidden Until Triggered for the target button.

Set On Roll Over in the Event dropdown menu.

Select Add new action for selected event icon, then choose Show/Hide Buttons and Forms.

Select the target button from the Visibility list and set it to Show.

Choose On Roll Off from the Event drop-down menu, then add Show/Hide Buttons and Forms.

Select the target button from the Visibility list and set it to Hide.
