Adjust page or spread layout

Last updated on Jun 2, 2026

Learn how to use Layout and Margins settings to resize existing document layouts automatically in Adobe InDesign.

You can modify margins and columns for specific pages or spreads without changing the overall document structure. InDesign preserves object alignment, spacing, text threading, and image proportions. You can choose whether to adjust locked objects. Text size changes are applied as overrides. For changes that affect all pages, you can change document layout settings instead.

Select Layout > Margins and Columns.

Enter the values in Margins and Columns.

Select Adjust Layout.

Select Adjust Font Size to adjust text automatically.

Select Set Font Size Limits to enter minimum and maximum limit values.

To reposition locked objects, select Adjust Locked Content.

Select OK.

Note

The Adjust Layout option in the Margins and Columns dialog box is deselected by default. Select it each time you want automatic adjustment.

To adjust multi-page spreads, first convert them to island spreads by deselecting Allow Selected Spread to Shuffle in the Pages panel (Window > Pages).
