Recover InDesign documents

Last updated on Jun 2, 2026

Resolve recovery failures by cleaning up folders and resetting preferences in Adobe InDesign.

When InDesign crashes, shuts down unexpectedly due to a system error, or experiences a power outage, it uses the automatic recovery feature to restore unsaved work from the InDesign Recovery folder. Recovery can fail if those temporary files become corrupted or if a damaged document causes InDesign to crash again during recovery. After a restart, InDesign tries to reopen files with the suffix [Recovered], but repeated crashes can continue until you manually clear the corrupted recovery data.

Clear corrupt recovery data

Select Edit > Preferences > File Handling (Windows) or InDesign > Preferences > File Handling (macOS).

Find the recovery folder location under the Document Recovery Data section.

Navigate to the recovery folder in your system and delete the corrupted data.

Corrupt InDesign preferences

Corrupted InDesign preferences can cause the application to crash during document recovery or prevent proper error handling. Once InDesign opens successfully with reset preferences, open your documents manually rather than relying on automatic recovery.

Ensure InDesign is completely closed.

Hold down Shift + Ctrl + Alt (Windows) or Shift + Cmd + Option (macOS) while launching InDesign.

Keep holding the keys until prompted to delete preference files.

Select Yes when asked to delete InDesign preference files.

Wait for InDesign to rebuild default preferences and launch.

Alert

Forcing repeated recovery attempts on severely corrupted documents can cause additional data loss. Always work with a copy of the damaged file when attempting manual recovery procedures.

If none of these solutions restore functionality, check the ProtectiveShutdownLog file in your InDesign recovery folder to identify whether third-party plugins caused the original crash.
