Use the Contextual Task Bar

Learn how to modify text, frame, and panel settings on Adobe InDesign directly from the floating Contextual Task Bar.

The Contextual Task Bar adapts to your current selection, displaying relevant formatting and workflow options without requiring you to access separate panels or menus. Ensure it's visible in your workspace. If hidden, select Window > Contextual Task Bar to display it.

Use scripts to control Contextual Task Bar visibility

You can now create a custom script to show or hide the Contextual Task Bar at the app or user level.

Use the Contextual Task Bar from a blank workspace

Create a new document in InDesign.

You can select any of the following options from the Contextual Task Bar:

  • Add a frame , then drag on the workspace to create a new frame.
  • Start with Image , then select Import File to add an existing image or select Text to Image to generate an image with a simple text prompt.
  • Type tool, then drag anywhere on the workspace to create a text frame and start typing.
  • Margins and Columns , then set the Margin and Column specifications for your document.
  • Add a Page , to add a new page with the same dimensions and properties as the existing one.

Select the ellipsis icon to Show Properties Panel , Start with a Template , Hide Context Bar , or Unpin Context Bar .

Use text formatting options

Select the Type tool from the Contextual Task Bar.

Drag anywhere on the workspace to create a text frame and add your content.

Use the Contextual Task Bar to select Generate Text  , Font Name, Font Style, Font Size, Fill color, and Align options.

Select the Paragraph and Character text styles icon to apply saved styles to your text.

Select the ellipsis icon to Show Properties Panel , Start with a Template , Hide Context Bar , or Unpin Context Bar .

Use frame and image options

Select Add a Frame from the Contextual Task Bar.

Drag on the workspace to create an image frame at your desired size.

Select Start with Image > Text to Image to generate an image using a text prompt or select Import Image to place an existing file.

Select the ellipsis icon to Show Properties Panel , Start with a Template , Hide Context Bar , or Unpin Context Bar .
