Apply paragraph borders and backgrounds

Learn how to apply paragraph borders and backgrounds with custom colors, strokes, and corner effects in Adobe InDesign.

Paragraph borders and backgrounds let you emphasize content, create hierarchy, or add styling without separate frames. They move with the text and can be applied to single or multiple paragraphs or saved in paragraph styles for consistency. They also follow paragraph formatting, such as indents and spacing.

Apply a border to selected paragraphs

Select the text frame or place the pointer on the text in the text frame.

Select Type > Paragraph.

Select Paragraph Borders and Shading from the Paragraph panel menu .

Tip

You can also access border options from the Paragraph Styles panel menu . Select Style Options and then select Paragraph Border.

Set the required paragraph border options to define the appearance of borders.

Ensure you are on the Border tab and select the Border checkbox to activate the settings.

Select Preview to view your changes, then select OK.

Apply background shading

Select the text frame or place the pointer on the text in the text frame.

Select Type > Paragraph.

Select Paragraph Borders and Shading from the Paragraph panel menu.

Select the Shading tab.

Set the required paragraph shading options to specify the appearance of the background.

Select the Shading checkbox to activate background shading for the paragraph.

Select OK.

Paragraph border and shading options

To configure paragraph borders or shading, understand each available option and its effect on your paragraph formatting. These settings appear in the Paragraph Borders and Shading dialog box.

Paragraph border options

Option

Description

Top

Sets the weight of the top border stroke.

Left

Sets the weight of the left border stroke.

Bottom

Sets the weight of the bottom border stroke.

Right

Sets the weight of the right border stroke.

Type

Defines the border stroke pattern.

Color

Sets the stroke color.

Tint

Adjusts the transparency of the stroke color.

Overprint

Prints the border color over the underlying colors.

Gap Color

Sets the color for spaces in patterned strokes.

Gap Tint

Adjusts the transparency of the gap color.

Cap

Defines the appearance of stroke endpoints. Butt Cap ends at the path, Round Cap extends with semicircles, and Projecting Cap extends with squared edges beyond the endpoints.

Join

Defines the appearance at corner points. Miter Join creates pointed corners, Round Join creates rounded corners, and Bevel Join creates squared corners at endpoints.

Corner Size and Shape

Customizes the appearance of corners.

Paragraph border offset and positioning options

Top

Extends the border beyond the top margin.

Left

Extends the border beyond the left margin.

Bottom

Extends the border beyond the bottom margin.

Right

Extends the border beyond the right margin.

Top Edge

Sets the vertical position of the top border edge.

Bottom Edge

Sets the vertical position of the bottom border edge.

Width

Defines the horizontal extent of the border. Column spans the entire text frame width and Text extends only across the text width.

Note

Use the chain button to link all offset values. When linked, changing one value updates all others proportionally.

Effect

Display Border if Paragraph Splits Across Frames/Columns

Controls the visibility of borders when text flows across boundaries.

When selected, the border appears on both portions of the split paragraph.

Merge Consecutive Borders and Shading with Same Settings

Combines borders of adjacent paragraphs with identical settings.

Creates a unified border around consecutive paragraphs. Does not merge if paragraphs are in different columns or non-threaded frames.

Color

Sets the background fill color.

Tint

Adjusts the transparency of the fill color.

Overprint

Prints the shading over the underlying colors.

Corner Size and Shape

Customizes the corner appearance.

Top (Offsets)

Extends the shading beyond the top margin.

Left (Offsets)

Extends the shading beyond the left margin.

Bottom (Offsets)

Extends the shading beyond the bottom margin.

Right (Offsets)

Extends the shading beyond the right margin.

Top Edge

Sets the vertical position of the top shading edge.

Bottom Edge

Sets the vertical position of the bottom shading edge.

Width

Defines the shading's horizontal extent. Column spans the entire text frame width, and Text extends only across the text width.

Clip To Frame

Limits shading to the frame boundaries.

When selected, shading stops at the frame edges.

Do not Print or Export

Excludes shading from the output.

When selected, shading appears only in InDesign. Ignored for PDF, EPUB, JPEG, and PNG export.
