Use smart guides

Last updated on Jun 2, 2026

Learn how to apply dynamic alignment cues to snap objects to page elements and other objects in Adobe InDesign.

Smart guides show temporary alignment cues as you create, move, resize, or rotate objects, helping you align with centers, edges, and spacing without manual measurement. They appear automatically when alignment points are nearby, snapping objects into place. Use smart guides for precise alignment across multiple objects. For fixed references that stay visible across the document, use ruler guides instead.

Turn smart guides on or off

Select View > Grids & Guides > Smart Guides to enable the feature.

Toggle the feature when checked to turn it off.

Configure smart guide categories

Select Edit > Preferences > Guides & Pasteboard (Windows) or InDesign > Preferences > Guides & Pasteboard (macOS).

In the Smart Guides section, select or deselect:

Align to Object Center: Shows guides when the object's center aligns.

Align to Object Edges: Shows guides when object edges line up.

Smart Dimensions: Shows size information while resizing or rotating objects.

Smart Spacing: Shows indicators when spacing between objects is equal.

Select OK.

Change smart guide appearance

Select Edit > Preferences > Guides & Pasteboard (Windows) or InDesign > Preferences > Guides & Pasteboard (macOS).

Select a different color from the Smart Guides menu in the Color section.

Select OK.

Note
  • Smart guides work most effectively when you zoom in on specific areas of your layout.
  • To turn off smart cursors, which display the X and Y values of objects you hover over, select Edit > Preferences > Interface (Windows) or InDesign > Preferences > Interface (macOS), then deselect Show Transformation Values.
