Edit math expressions

Last updated on Jun 2, 2026

Learn how to use on-canvas editing or MathML code to modify equations and formulas in Adobe InDesign.

InDesign lets you edit math expressions either directly on the canvas with the Type tool or through the MathML Input dialog box. Both editing methods update the mathematical notation in real time, maintaining the formatting and styling you've applied.

Edit directly on the canvas

Double-click the expression using the Selection tool to edit it, or select the entire equation or a part of the equation using the Type tool to edit it.

Navigate through the expression using the arrow keys to position your cursor precisely.

Type new values or use the Math Expressions (Window > Math Expressions) panel to insert Symbols and Expressions from the presets.

Press Esc to exit editing mode.

Tip

Copy and paste math expressions within InDesign using its on-canvas copy-paste feature. You can also copy one math expression at a time from Microsoft Word, then paste it into InDesign, and later edit it as a native math expression.

Edit using MathML code

Use the Type tool to select the math expression.

Right-click the math expression, then select Edit MathML.

Modify the MathML code in the MathML Input section.

Select the Preview Expression icon to view your changes in the Expression Preview section.

Select Save.
