Overprint paragraph and footnote rules

Last updated on Jun 2, 2026

Learn how to apply overprint attributes to paragraph rules and footnote separators in Adobe InDesign to eliminate registration issues in print production.

Use overprinting for rules when you want them to sit cleanly over underlying colors without knocking them out. This is especially useful for thin rules, where misregistration is more noticeable. Configure overprint settings directly in the paragraph rule or footnote rule options. The setting becomes part of the style or footnote formatting for reliable, repeatable output.

Configure overprint for paragraph rules

Using the Type tool, select an insertion point in the paragraph that contains the rule you want to overprint.

Select Type > Paragraph to open the Paragraph panel.

Select the panel menu icon and then select Paragraph Rules to open the Paragraph Rules dialog box.

Select Rule Above or Rule Below depending on which rule you want to configure.

Select Rule On to ensure the rule is active.

Adjust the appearance as needed for your design.

Select Overprint Stroke to make the rule print over underlying colors.

If your rule uses a dashed, dotted, or patterned stroke style, select Overprint Gap to also overprint the spaces between dashes or dots.

Select OK to apply the settings.

The Overprint Stroke and Overprint Gap settings can be saved as part of a paragraph style, making it easy to apply consistent overprint behavior to multiple paragraphs throughout your document. When defining or editing a paragraph style, access these same options through the Paragraph Rules section of the style definition.

Tip

Use Window > Output > Separations Preview to preview how your overprinted rules will appear in the final output before sending to press.

Configure overprint for footnote rules

Select Type > Document Footnote Options to open the Footnote Options dialog box.

Select the Layout tab to access the footnote rule formatting controls.

In the Rule Above section, configure the stroke appearance.

Select Overprint Stroke to make the footnote separator rule print over underlying colors without knocking them out.

Select OK to apply the settings document-wide.

Footnote rule overprint settings apply to all footnotes in the current document. The rule above footnotes serves as a visual separator between body text and footnote text, and overprinting this rule prevents registration issues when footnotes appear over colored backgrounds or complex page designs.
