Fill empty spaces in compound paths

Last updated on Jun 2, 2026

Learn how to reverse subpath direction to change filled and transparent areas in compound paths in Adobe InDesign.

Use this procedure when a hole in a compound path appears to be filled, or when a hole in a compound path appears to be unfilled. InDesign uses the direction of each subpath to decide what is filled and what is transparent. Reverse the path direction to switch between holes and filled areas.

Open the document that contains the compound path.

Select the compound path.

Use the Direct Selection  tool to select an anchor point on the specific subpath you want to modify, not the entire compound path.

Select Object > Paths > Reverse Path. You can also select Reverse Path in the Pathfinder panel (Window > Object & Layout).
