Last updated on Jun 2, 2026

Learn how to turn on Autocorrect, add custom corrections, and use Dynamic Spelling as you type in Adobe InDesign.

Use Autocorrect and Dynamic Spelling to detect and correct common spelling and capitalization errors as you type. You can create a custom list of frequently misspelled words to match your document’s needs for consistent accuracy across projects.

Turn on Autocorrect and add custom word corrections

Select Edit > Preferences > Autocorrect (Windows) or InDesign > Preferences > Autocorrect (macOS).

Select Enable Autocorrect to activate the feature.

Select Autocorrect Capitalization Errors to correct capitalization errors. You don’t need to add the capitalized words to the list of autocorrections.

Select your working language from the Language dropdown menu.

Select Add.

In the Add to Autocorrect List dialog box, type the Misspelled Word and the Correction in the respective fields.

Select OK.

Note

To start auto-correcting text for a specific section or document, select Edit > Spelling > Autocorrect.

Use dynamic spelling

Select Edit > Spelling > Dynamic Spelling.

Potentially misspelled words appear underlined in your document

Right-click (Windows) or hold Control and select (macOS) any underlined word to view suggested corrections in the context menu.

Select a suggestion to replace the word or select Add "<word>" To User Dictionary to accept the spelling.
