Embed a table within a table

Last updated on Jun 2, 2026

Learn how to place tables within table cells to build complex nested structures in Adobe InDesign.

Place a table inside a cell to create a nested table for hierarchical data or complex layouts. The outer table stays editable, and both tables can be formatted independently. The nested table inherits the container cell’s width.

Embed an existing table

Select the cells or table to embed using the Type tool.

Select Edit > Cut or Copy.

Place the insertion point inside the target cell.

Select Edit > Paste.

Adjust the cell inset as necessary.

Insert a new table inside a cell

Place the insertion point inside the table cell using the Type tool.

Select Table > Insert Table.

Specify the required number of rows and columns.

Select OK.

Adjust the cell inset as necessary.

Note

If a table inside a cell extends beyond its boundary, you can’t select the hidden part with the pointer. Expand the row or column, or place the cursor at the start and use keyboard shortcuts to navigate and select it.
