Graphics appear pixelated, fuzzy, or grainy

Resolve image display issues by adjusting view settings and checking import methods in Adobe InDesign.

Blurry or pixelated images in an InDesign layout are often the result of display preview settings, over‑scaling, or low‑quality source files. InDesign may reduce preview quality to improve performance, resulting in images appearing grainy in the document window. However, the same graphics typically appear sharp in Photoshop, Illustrator, and exported PDFs, and the issue rarely affects final output.

Reduced display quality

Select Edit > Preferences > Display Performance (Windows) or InDesign > Preferences > Display Performance (macOS).

Select High Quality from the Default View drop-down menu. The display option you choose applies to all documents you open or create.

You can also select the display option from View > Display Performance > High Quality Display.

Select Preserve Object-Level Display Settings to apply the selected display settings to individual objects.

Select OK.

Zoom in to confirm improved sharpness.

Pasted images instead of using Place

Images pasted from other applications may contain only low-resolution preview data rather than the original file. Using the Place command establishes a proper link to the original file, allowing InDesign to access the full-resolution data for both display and output.

Delete the affected graphic.

Select File > Place.

Navigate to the original file location.

Select the file and select Open.

Place the image at full size or draw a frame to scale proportionally.

Image is transformed beyond its native resolution

The image may be scaled beyond its native resolution, reducing effective PPI. For professional print output, bitmap images should typically not be scaled over 100% of their original size. The ideal resolution for print graphics is 300 ppi at the final output size.

Select the image frame with the Selection tool (V).

Select Window > Links to open the Links panel.

Review Effective PPI in the Link Info section.

If the image is scaled beyond its native resolution, replace with a higher-resolution version of the same image.

Print settings set to send low-resolution proxy images

Print settings may be configured to send low-resolution proxy images to the printer instead of full-resolution data.

Select File > Print.

In the Print dialog box, select Graphics.

Select All from the Send Data drop-down menu.

Verify the Download setting is appropriate for your printer.

Select Print.
