Add or delete anchor points

Last updated on Jun 2, 2026

Learn how to use the various Pen tool options to modify paths by adding or removing anchor points in Adobe InDesign.

Adding anchor points gives you more control over a path or extends an open path. Deleting unnecessary anchor points simplifies paths, making them easier to edit, display, and print.

This procedure modifies existing paths by adjusting the number of anchor points. To reshape paths by moving anchor points or adjusting direction handles, use the Direct Selection tool instead.

You can add or delete anchor points on any selected path using the Pen tool, Add Anchor Point tool, or Delete Anchor Point tool. InDesign automatically switches the Pen tool to the appropriate mode when you position it over a selected path or anchor point.

Select the Pen tool from the toolbar to draw the path.

Select the Add Anchor Point tool, position the pointer over a path segment, and select to add an anchor point.

Select the Delete Anchor Point tool, position the pointer over an anchor point, and select to delete the anchor point.

Caution

Don’t use the Delete or Backspace keys or the Edit > Cut or Edit > Clear commands to delete anchor points. These keys and commands delete the point and the line segments that connect it.
