Snap objects to grids

Last updated on Jun 2, 2026

Learn how to allow grid snapping to automatically align objects with document or baseline grids in Adobe InDesign.

Grid snapping aligns objects automatically when dragged near grid lines. Objects snap within a set range (snap zone) of grid lines. Snapping works with both visible and hidden grids, though visible grids make alignment easier.

Allow snapping to the document grid

Select View > Grids & Guides > Snap to Document Grid.

Select Edit > Preferences > Guides & Pasteboard (Windows) or InDesign > Preferences > Guides & Pasteboard (macOS).

Enter a value in pixels in the Snap to Zone field to control how close objects must be before snapping occurs.

Select OK.

Drag any object toward the document grid until one or more edges are within the snap zone distance of a grid line.

Allow snapping to the baseline grid

Select View > Grids & Guides > Snap to Guides.

Select Edit > Preferences > Guides & Pasteboard (Windows) or InDesign > Preferences > Guides & Pasteboard (macOS).

Enter a Snap to Zone value in pixels and select OK.

Drag objects near baseline grid lines to snap their edges into alignment.

Note

The Snap to Guides command controls snapping behavior for both ruler guides and the baseline grid.
