GPU performance in InDesign

Last updated on Jun 2, 2026

Learn more about improving rendering and interaction performance using GPU acceleration in Adobe InDesign.

Overview

The Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) is a processor that handles image rendering and display tasks. InDesign uses GPU acceleration to improve responsiveness and provide smoother performance.

On high-resolution HiDPI displays, rendering can increase CPU load. GPU acceleration shifts rendering tasks to the GPU, allowing smoother zooming, scrolling, and panning with high-quality display.

On supported systems, InDesign uses the GPU automatically and sets display performance to High Quality Display. If performance issues occur, switch to CPU rendering or change the preview mode.

Technical requirements

Windows

  • Minimum 1024 MB VRAM (2 GB recommended)
  • Monitor resolution greater than 2K
  • OpenGL version 4.4 or later

macOS

  • Minimum 1024 MB VRAM (2 GB recommended)
  • Support for Metal

GPU acceleration on macOS uses the Metal API, improving responsiveness on systems with Apple silicon (M1 and later).

Supported macOS devices include:

  • iMac 4K and 5K
  • MacBook Pro Retina
  • Mac Pro connected to a HiDPI monitor
  • Mac mini connected to a HiDPI monitor

Use GPU performance

When a compatible GPU is available, InDesign uses it automatically for rendering. GPU acceleration improves tasks such as zooming, panning, and working with high-resolution assets.

GPU features provide smoother full-quality rendering and better responsiveness during demanding design tasks.

Deactivate GPU performance

GPU performance is active by default on supported systems. You can switch to CPU-based rendering by selecting Edit > Preferences > GPU Performance and then deselecting the GPU Performance option.

Change preview mode

Preview modes allow switching between GPU and CPU rendering without changing preferences. To switch between GPU Preview and CPU Preview, press Shift + E. You can access GPU Preview and Preview on CPU from the View menu.

Animated Zoom

GPU acceleration powers features such as Animated Zoom and provides smoother zoom interactions. To use this feature, select the Zoom tool and press and hold anywhere on the document to zoom toward the center. To zoom out, press and hold Option (macOS) or Alt (Windows). You can also use Shift to switch to marquee zoom mode.
