Learn how to use drawing tools to create lines, rectangles, ellipses, and polygons for your Adobe InDesign layouts.

Drawing shapes in InDesign lets you create custom graphics, frames, and design elements that scale cleanly. Use the drawing tools to create filled shapes or placeholder frames directly in your layout.

Select a drawing tool from the toolbar: Line tool, Ellipse tool, Rectangle tool, or Polygon tool.

Drag in the document window to create your shape or line.

Hold Shift while dragging to constrain a line to 45° angles, or to constrain the width and height of a path to the same proportions.

Hold Alt (Windows) or Option (macOS) while dragging to draw from the center outward.

Hold Spacebar while dragging to reposition the shape without releasing the mouse button.

Press the Up and Down arrow keys while dragging to change the number of sides of a polygon, and the Left and Right arrow keys to change the number of polygons.

Tip

Press V or Esc after drawing to switch to the Selection tool and immediately reposition or resize your new shape.
