Startup crash loop

Last updated on Jun 2, 2026

Fix startup crash loops caused by damaged recovery files or corrupted preferences after an unexpected InDesign crash.

When Adobe InDesign crashes while a document is open, the document recovery feature automatically attempts to reopen that file the next time you launch InDesign. If the document itself is damaged, this creates a crash loop that prevents InDesign from starting successfully.

After InDesign crashes unexpectedly, subsequent launch attempts result in another immediate crash. The application may display a splash screen briefly before closing, or it may crash silently without any error message. The crash occurs before you can access menus, preferences, or any InDesign functionality.

Damaged document in the recovery folder

Select InDesign > Preferences > File Handling (macOS) or Edit > Preferences > File Handling (Windows).

Change the Document Recovery Data path.

Corrupt preferences

Hold Ctrl + Alt + Shift (Windows) or Cmd + Option + Shift + Ctrl (macOS) while launching InDesign.

Select Yes when prompted to delete preference files.
