Learn how to reposition and rotate objects precisely in Adobe InDesign using selection and transformation tools.

Moving and rotating objects are common tasks when refining layouts. Several tools let you reposition or adjust objects with precision. Before moving objects, ensure they are not locked, as locked objects cannot be transformed. Use the Selection tools to move objects, nudge them with arrow keys for precise adjustments, or enter exact values in the Control or Transform panels.

Move objects by dragging

Select the Selection tool.

Select the object, or hold Shift and select multiple objects.

Position your pointer over the selected object until the pointer changes to a four-headed arrow.

Drag the object to its new location.

Hold Shift while dragging to constrain movement to 45° angles (horizontal, vertical, or diagonal).

To duplicate, hold Alt (Windows) or Option (macOS) while dragging.

Move objects with the arrow keys

Select the object using the Selection tool.

Press the arrow keys on your keyboard to nudge the object in 1-point increments.

Hold Shift while pressing the arrow keys to move the object in larger increments.

Move objects to precise coordinates

Select the object using the Selection tool.

Select Window > Object & Layout > Transform.

Enter new values in the X field (horizontal position) or Y field (vertical position) to move the object to exact coordinates.

Press Enter.

Rotate objects interactively

Select the Rotate tool from the toolbar.

Position the reference point to set the center of rotation.

Position your cursor away from the reference point, then drag in a circular motion to rotate the object.

Hold Shift while dragging to constrain rotation to 45° increments.

Rotate objects to precise angles

Select the object using the Selection tool.

Select Window > Object & Layout > Transform.

Locate the Rotation Angle icon and enter the desired rotation angle. Positive values rotate counterclockwise, negative values rotate clockwise.

Press Enter.

Rotate objects around a specific point

Use the Selection tool to choose the object.

Choose Object > Transform > Rotate.

Enter the rotation angle in the Angle field.

Choose a reference point in the diagram to specify the point around which the object rotates.

Select Preview to see the rotation before committing, then select OK.
