Learn how to set default object styles and rename, edit, delete, or redefine styles in Adobe InDesign.

Set default object styles

Open the Object Styles panel and select the panel menu icon.

Select an option to set the default style:

  • Select Default Text Frame Style, then select the object style to set it as the default for new text frames.
  • Select Default Graphics Frame Style, then select the object style to set it as the default for new graphics frames.
  • Select Default Grid Style, then select the object style to set it as the default for new grid frames.

Optionally, drag the default object type icon from one object style to another to reassign the default for that object type.

Graphic placeholder frames (with an X) always use the None style and cannot use a different default. If you select an object style with no frame selected, it becomes the default for text or graphics based on the active tool.

Rename an object style

Open the Object Styles panel by selecting Window > Styles > Object Styles.

Double-click the object style you want to rename.

In the Object Style Options dialog box, type a new name in the Style Name field.

Select OK.

You can also edit an object style name directly in the panel. Select the object style, pause, and then select again to edit the style name.

Edit object style properties

Select Window > Styles > Object Styles.

Right-click (Windows) or Control-click (macOS) the style name and select Edit [style name] to edit the style without applying it to selected objects or set as the default. You can also select an object and double-click a style name to apply the style while editing it.

In the Object Style Options dialog box, change the desired settings.

Select OK.

Delete an object style

Select Window > Styles > Object Styles.

Select the object style you want to delete, then select the Delete icon.

If you delete a style applied to objects or used as the basis for other styles, select one of the following options from the Delete Object Style dialog box to specify a replacement style:

  • Select a replacement style and select OK to restyle objects that use the deleted style.
  • Select [None], make sure Preserve Formatting is selected, and select OK to leave objects unchanged.
  • Select [None], deselect Preserve Formatting, and select OK to remove all attribute settings.

Select Select All Unused from the Object Styles panel menu, and then select the Delete icon to delete all styles not applied to objects.

Redefine an object style

Select an object (frame, shape, or text frame) that uses the style you want to change using the Selection Tool icon.

Select Window > Styles > Object Styles.

Modify the object's appearance attributes as desired.

Select the panel menu icon, then select Redefine Style. The object style definition changes to match the override settings you applied. All occurrences of the object style in the document are updated to use the new settings.

If the Redefine Style option isn’t available, the attributes you set aren’t part of the object style definition. To change the style definition directly, open the Object Style Options dialog box or create a new style from the object.
