Edit data field placeholders

Last updated on Jun 2, 2026

Learn how to format and modify placeholder text in Adobe InDesign to control how merged data appears.

When you add a text data field to a document, the placeholder text for the field is entered using the formatting attributes (such as font and size) active at the insertion point.

Select the placeholder text and change its formatting in the Character panel (Window > Character).

Select the placeholder or its data and then select a different field name in the Data Merge panel to change a placeholder. You can also delete a placeholder by selecting one and pressing Delete. In Story Editor view, placeholders appear like hyperlinks. Some data merge options are not available in this view.
