Crash on lost network connection

Last updated on Jun 2, 2026

Resolve unexpected Adobe InDesign shutdowns by moving files locally or fixing network stability.

When InDesign loses its network connection while you’re working on files stored on a server or network drive, it intentionally shuts down to prevent data loss. This may look like a crash, often during editing or saving, but InDesign is actually triggering its recovery system. Because it reads and writes data incrementally, any network interruption forces it to save your changes to a local recovery file and exit. Working locally avoids these shutdowns.

Unable to connect to the cloud server

Copy your InDesign document and all linked assets to a local drive.

Work on the local copy throughout your editing session.

Save your work regularly using File > Save.

Copy the completed file back to the network location when finished.

Verify all linked assets transferred correctly by checking Window > Links.

If you must work directly from network storage, network stability is critical.

Network infrastructure issues such as intermittent connectivity, bandwidth limitations, or server timeouts disrupt InDesign file access during document operations. Work with IT to implement a stable network solution that supports continuous file access. Until network stability improves, continue working from local storage to prevent data loss.
