Use a document grid

Last updated on Jun 2, 2026

Learn how to use grid lines in Adobe InDesign to align objects and snap items into position on pages.

Document grids display nonprinting horizontal and vertical lines across the pasteboard to help align objects precisely. Use them to position and space objects consistently across your layout. They work independently of baseline grids and can appear in front of or behind objects.

Select Edit > Preferences > Grids (Windows) or InDesign > Preferences > Grids (macOS).

Select a grid color from the Color menu in the Document Grid section or select Custom.

In the Horizontal section, enter values:

Gridline Every: Set the spacing between major grid lines.

Subdivisions: Specify how many lines appear between each major gridline.

Tip

Use subdivisions to create finer alignment points. For example, setting Gridline Every to 1 inch with 4 subdivisions creates alignment points every 0.25 inches.

Set the same values for the Vertical section to configure vertical grid spacing.

Select Grids in Back to position grids behind all objects. Deselect to place grids in front of objects.

Select OK.
