Highlight spacing issues

Last updated on Jun 2, 2026

Learn how to use composition highlighting to reveal spacing problems in text in Adobe InDesign.

Composition highlighting shows lines with spacing issues based on your justification settings, with yellow shading indicating severity.

It applies to all text, appears only in InDesign, and doesn’t print or export. Use it to identify where spacing adjustments or text edits may be needed.

Highlight spacing issues

Select Edit > Preferences > Composition (Windows) or InDesign > Preferences > Composition (macOS).

Check H&J Violations under the Highlight section.

Select OK.

When composition highlighting reveals spacing issues, you can adjust justification or hyphenation settings from the Paragraph panel menu , edit the text, or accept the composition if the result meets your layout standards.

Highlight text containing custom kerning and tracking

InDesign highlights text with custom kerning or tracking using green overlays, making spacing adjustments easy to spot.

The highlighting appears only in Layout view and doesn’t print or export with your document. Any text with spacing values that differ from the font’s defaults is highlighted.

Select Edit > Preferences > Composition (Windows) or InDesign > Preferences > Composition (macOS).

Select the Custom Tracking/Kerning checkbox in the Highlight section.

Select OK.

  • To remove custom adjustments and restore default spacing, select the highlighted text and set Kerning to Metrics and Tracking to 0 in the Character panel or Control panel.
  • To temporarily hide all highlighting without changing preferences, press W to switch to Preview mode.
