Manage layer visibility and stacking order

Last updated on Jun 2, 2026

Learn how to use layer controls to change visibility and display sequence for organized layouts in Adobe InDesign.

Manage layers to control object visibility, prevent accidental edits, and maintain visual hierarchy in multi-layer documents. The Layers panel displays layers from top to bottom, with objects on higher layers appearing in front of those on lower layers.

Change layer stacking order

Select Window > Layers to open the Layers panel.

Select the layer name you want to move and drag it up or down in the panel.

Release the pointer when the horizontal line appears at the desired position.

The layer and all its objects appear in the new stacking position.

Show or hide layers

Select Window > Layers to open the Layers panel.

Select how you want to control layer visibility:

  • To hide or show a layer, select the eye icon next to the layer name in the Layers panel.
  • To show or hide individual objects in a layer, select the disclosure arrow next to it to view all objects, and then select the eye icon.
  • To hide all layers except the selected layer, or to hide all objects on a layer except the selected object, select the Layers panel menu  , then select Hide Others.
  • To show all layers, select the Layers panel menu   icon, then select Show All Layers.
Note

Hidden layers don't print or export. Use this feature to manage complex documents or create alternate versions without deleting content.
