Create and set up layers

Last updated on Jun 2, 2026

Learn how to create layers and configure layer settings for better document organization in Adobe InDesign.

Layers in InDesign span the entire document, including all pages and parent pages. When you create a layer, you define how content is organized on a document level. Use layers to manage complex documents, alternate designs, or high-resolution graphics.

Create a new layer

Select Window > Layers to open the Layers panel.

Select Create new layer    in the Layers panel to create a layer above the currently selected one.

To create a layer below the selected layer, hold Ctrl (Windows) or Command (macOS) while selecting the Create new layer button.

To open the New Layer dialog box with additional options, hold Alt (Windows) or Option (macOS) while selecting the Create new layer button.

Configure layer properties

In the Layers panel, double-click an existing layer name.

In the Layer Options dialog box, enter a descriptive name for the layer in the Name field.

Select a color from the Color drop-down menu to identify objects on that layer.

Note

When you select an object, its selection handles, bounding box, and frame edges display the layer's assigned color.

Select Show Layer to make the layer visible or deselect it to hide it on all pages.

Select Lock Layer to prevent changes to any objects on the layer.

Select Print Layer to print the layer.

Select Suppress Text Wrap When Layer Is Hidden if you want text on other layers to ignore text wrap settings from hidden objects on this layer.

Select OK to apply the settings.
