Print as bitmap

Last updated on Jun 2, 2026

Learn how to rasterize layouts in Adobe InDesign during printing to prevent errors with complex design elements.

Printing as a bitmap rasterizes the page before printing, which can resolve issues with complex objects, such as gradients or smooth shading. While this improves reliability, it reduces precision, making it better suited for proofs than final output.

The Print as Bitmap option is available only when printing to non-PostScript printers.

Configure bitmap printing settings

Select File > Print.

In the Printer menu, verify your non-PostScript printer is selected.

Select Advanced from the options list in the Print dialog box.

Select Print as Bitmap.

Enter a resolution value appropriate for your printer.

Tip

Higher resolutions improve quality but increase processing time and memory use. Use 300 dpi for proofs and test 600 dpi for higher quality.

Review other print settings, then select Print.
