Update an index

Learn how to regenerate index entries and maintain consistency as your document evolves in Adobe InDesign.

After creating an index, regenerate it to update entries, topics, and page numbers. Use the Index panel to make changes. Edits to the generated index are overwritten when it's regenerated.

Select Window > Types & Tables > Index.

Make changes to index entries in the panel or add new index markers in your document.

Select or place the insertion point using the Type tool in the text frame containing the existing index.

Select the Index panel menu icon, then select Generate Index.

Select Replace Existing Index.

Select OK.
