Track text changes

Last updated on Jun 2, 2026

Learn how to use the Track Changes feature in Adobe InDesign to review edits made by multiple contributors.

Change tracking marks every addition, deletion, and text move made by contributors during the editing process. This feature helps you maintain control over collaborative editing by letting you review and approve changes before they become permanent.

Turn on Track Changes

Select Window > Editorial > Track Changes.

Place your cursor in the text you want to track.

Select the Enable Track Changes in Current Story icon in the Track Changes panel.

Select Enable Track Changes In All Stories from the Track Changes panel menu to start tracking across all stories at once.

Make your text edits to track them.

View change details

Select Window > Editorial > Track Changes.

Place your cursor inside any tracked change.

Review the User Name, Change Time, and Change Type displayed in the Track Changes panel.

Turn off Track Changes

Select Window > Editorial > Track Changes.

Place your cursor in the story where tracking is enabled.

Select the Disable Track Changes in Current Story icon.

Tip

Turning off tracking stops marking new changes but preserves all previously tracked edits. To stop tracking across all stories, select Disable Track Changes in All Stories from the Track Changes panel menu.
