Learn how to use Selection tools in Adobe InDesign to select objects, frames, and paths.

Selection tools help you identify and modify frames, paths, and content. The Selection tool is used for general layout tasks such as positioning and resizing objects, while the Direct Selection tool lets you work with anchor points and path segments for more precise editing.

Select a single object

Use the Selection tool to select the object.

For unfilled paths, select the path edge. For images, select the frame or the content grabber   icon to select the image.

Select multiple objects

Use the Selection tool to select the first object.

Hold Shift and select additional objects to add them to the selection.

Select objects using a marquee

Using the Selection tool, position the pointer outside the objects to select.

Drag diagonally to create a selection rectangle that touches or encloses the objects.

Release the mouse button when all desired objects are within or touched by the marquee.

Select anchor points or path segments

Select the Direct Selection tool.

Select the path to display its anchor points.

Select an anchor point to select it, or hold Shift, then select additional anchor points to include them in the selection.

To select all anchor points on a path, select the center point of the object.
