Last updated on Jun 2, 2026

Learn how to move or copy text within Adobe InDesign document by dragging it between text frames, Layout View, or Story Editor.

Drag and drop lets you reposition text quickly without using cut and paste. Use this method to move or copy small amounts of text within the same document.

You can drag text in Layout view, Story Editor, or between both views. To move text between different documents or from other applications, use copy and paste or the Place command.

Select Edit > Preferences > Type (Windows) or InDesign > Preferences > Type (macOS).

Select Enable in Layout View and Enable in Story Editor, then select OK.

Pause over the selected text till the cursor changes, then drag the text.

Do any of the following:

  • To drop the text in a new location, position the vertical bar where you want the text to appear, then release the mouse button.
  • To drop the text in a new frame, hold down Ctrl (Windows) or Command (macOS) after you start dragging, and then release the mouse button before releasing the key.
  • To drop the text without formatting, hold down Shift after you start dragging, and then release the mouse button before releasing the key.
  • To copy the text, hold down Alt (Windows) or Option (macOS) after you start dragging, and then release the mouse button before releasing the key.
Tip

You can combine modifier keys for advanced operations. For example, hold Alt + Shift + Ctrl (Windows) or Option + Shift + Command (macOS) to copy unformatted text to a new frame. Always release the mouse button before releasing modifier keys.
