Learn about the basics of digital identity.

A digital identity (digital ID) is like an electronic passport that allows you to securely verify your identity, such as when e-signing a document. After thorough identity verification, each digital ID is backed by a digital certificate issued by a trusted third party, such as a bank or government. Using a digital ID ensures that the person authorizing an e-signature is truly the intended individual.

Digital certificates

A digital certificate is an electronic representation of data associated with a person or organization based on the X509 standard. It's typically stored in a password-protected file on a computer or network, USB token, smart card, or other security hardware device.

Certificate Authority (CA)

A Certificate Authority (CA) issues digital certificates for e-signing and certifying documents.

Trust Service Provider (TSP)

A Trust Service Provider (TSP) offers secure identity and transaction services, including issuing digital signing certificates to create and validate digital signatures. Adobe Sign allows organizations to choose from multiple TSPs and utilizes trust lists like the  Adobe Approved Trust List (AATL) and the European Union Trusted Lists (EUTL).

Qualified Trust Service Provider (QTSP)

A QTSP is a TSP certified by an accredited auditor to issue digital certificates for creating the highest quality digital signatures, such as qualified electronic signatures (QES). For example, in the EU, only a QTSP can issue the digital certificates required to generate a QES that is recognized by all EU Member States. Depending on the country, the term used in regulations may vary.

Identity Provider (IDP)

An Identity Provider (IdP) is usually a government or private sector organization that offers a trusted digital identification service. Before an individual is issued a digital ID for transactions and document signing, their identity is thoroughly verified. For more information on which IdPs are available for use in Adobe Acrobat Sign, refer to the Cloud signature identity providers (IdP).
