Relink a dynamically linked composition

Last updated on Apr 2, 2026

Learn to reconnect offline After Effects compositions to restore Dynamic Link functionality in your Adobe Premiere project.

Dynamically linked compositions may appear offline in Premiere when the source After Effects project has been renamed, moved, or deleted. Relinking restores the connection without recreating the composition or losing timeline edits. This procedure works for compositions that are already dynamically linked, and not for establishing new Dynamic Links.

Offline compositions display an Offline icon in the Project panel. You can relink them to the original After Effects project or redirect the link to a different composition if needed.

Reconnect the composition to its source project

In the Project panel, right-click the offline composition.

Select Link Media from the context menu.

In the displayed dialog box, navigate to and select the After Effects project file (.aep).

Select Open.

Premiere automatically relinks the composition and restores the Dynamic Link connection. The composition immediately reflects any changes made in the After Effects source project.

Tip

If the After Effects project contains multiple compositions, ensure you select the correct project file. Premiere will automatically reconnect to the same composition name.
