Modify a dynamically linked composition in After Effects

Last updated on Apr 2, 2026

Learn how to use Adobe Premiere to open and edit a linked After Effects composition so your updates in After Effects appear automatically in your project.

Use the Edit Original command in Adobe Premiere to open and modify a linked Adobe After Effects composition. After the composition is open in After Effects once, you can continue making changes without using Edit Original again.

Select the linked After Effects composition in the Project panel.

Select Edit > Edit Original to open the composition in After Effects. After Effects launches and opens the composition for editing.

Modify the composition in After Effects as needed.

Switch back to Premiere to view the updated changes.

The changes you make in After Effects appear in Premiere. Premiere stops using any preview files that were previously rendered for the clip.

You can rename the composition in After Effects after creating a dynamic link from Premiere. Premiere does not update the linked composition name in the Project panel, but the dynamic link remains intact.
