Edit XMP metadata

Last updated on Apr 1, 2026

Use the Metadata panel to modify descriptive properties embedded in your media files in Adobe Premiere.

XMP metadata is descriptive information embedded directly in your source files, making it accessible across Adobe applications and workflows. Edit XMP properties to add details like copyright information, location data, scene descriptions, or custom workflow tags that travel with your media throughout production.

The Metadata panel lets you edit XMP properties for individual clips or multiple files simultaneously. Unlike clip properties that exist only in your Premiere project, XMP metadata is written directly to source files and appears in other applications, including Adobe Bridge and After Effects. Edit XMP metadata when you need to add descriptive information that should persist with your media files across applications and workflows.

  • Clips or files imported into your Premiere project
  • Write permissions for the source files you want to modify
  • Metadata panel visible (select Window > Metadata if needed)

Modify metadata properties

Select one or more clips in the Project or Timeline panel.

In the Metadata panel, scroll to locate the property you want to edit.

Select the text box for the property and enter or modify the value.

Note

When you select multiple items with different property values, the Metadata panel displays in that field. Entering new text in these fields applies the same value to all selected items.

The properties you edit are immediately written to the source files for single-item selections. For multiple selections, changes are applied when you confirm the edit.
