Create metadata schemas and properties

Last updated on Apr 1, 2026

Learn to define custom metadata fields to organize and track assets specific to your unique production workflow in Adobe Premiere.

Custom metadata schemas let you track information specific to your production workflow that isn't covered by default metadata options like Dynamic Media or Dublin Core. For example, a documentary team might create a schema for interview subjects, locations, and release status. Custom schemas appear in the Metadata panel alongside built-in schemas and are embedded in source files using XMP standards.

Before you begin:

Before creating custom schemas, review the default metadata options in the Metadata panel to confirm that your needs aren't already addressed by existing schemas such as Dynamic Media, Exif, or Dublin Core.

Create a custom schema

In the Metadata panel, select the panel menu icon and choose Metadata Display.

Select New Schema at the bottom of the dialog box.

Use New Schema in the Metadata Display dialog to create a custom metadata schema.

Enter a name for your schema that reflects its purpose, such as "Interview Metadata" or "Marketing Assets."

Select OK to create the schema.

Your new schema appears in the list and is ready for properties to be added.

Add properties to your schema

In the Metadata Display dialog box, locate your newly created schema in the list.

Select Add Property next to your schema name.

Enter a descriptive property name like "Scene Location" or "Interview Subject."

Select a property type from the Type menu based on the data you'll store.

Choose the appropriate type based on what information the property will contain:

  • Integer: Displays whole numbers that you can adjust by dragging or clicking. Use for counts, ratings, or sequential numbering.
  • Real: Displays fractional numbers for precise measurements like camera sensor values or aspect ratios.
  • Text: Displays a text entry field for descriptive information like names, locations, or notes.
  • Boolean: Displays a checkbox for yes/no or on/off values, such as "Approved" or "Color Corrected" status.
Add Property dialog box is open showing the Type dropdown with options Integer, Real, Text, and Boolean.
Choose the property type when creating a new metadata property.

Repeat to add additional properties as needed for your workflow.

Select OK to save your custom schema and properties.

Once created, your custom metadata properties appear in the Metadata panel when you select assets in the Project panel. The properties are embedded directly in source files and remain accessible across Adobe applications that support XMP metadata.

Tip

To modify your custom schemas later, return to Metadata Display from the Metadata panel menu. You can add more properties, rename schemas, or remove unused schemas to keep your workflow organized.
