Link clip data to XMP metadata

Last updated on Apr 1, 2026

Learn to use the linking feature to automatically sync clip information to file metadata in Adobe Premiere.

Linking connects internal clip data stored in your project file to XMP metadata embedded in source files. This connection makes clip information accessible to other applications, including Adobe Bridge and other Adobe video applications. Link fields only when you want clip-specific data synchronized with the source file. For workflows using multiple clip instances pointing to the same source file, avoid linking fields to prevent data conflicts.

Understanding the difference between clip data and file metadata helps you manage information effectively. Clip data exists only in your Premiere project file and describes individual clip instances, such as subclips with unique In and Out points, all of which reference the same source file. File metadata embeds directly into source files and remains accessible across Adobe applications.

When you link a clip data field, Premiere automatically copies any information you enter into that field to the corresponding XMP metadata field. This synchronization begins at the moment you create the link and continues for all future edits. Existing clip data entered before linking is not copied.

Most linked fields share identical names between clip data and XMP metadata. Two exceptions exist: the Name field links to Title in the Dublin Core schema, and Log Note links to Log Comment in the Dynamic Media schema.

Enable metadata field linking

Select Window > Metadata if the Metadata panel isn't already visible.

Select a clip in the Project panel or Timeline panel to view its metadata.

Scroll down in the Metadata panel under Clip until you see fields with empty link buttons to the right.

Use the link icon to connect clip data fields with XMP metadata in the Metadata panel.

Select the link   button next to any field you want to synchronize with XMP metadata.

Verify that a chain icon appears in the link button, confirming the connection is active.

After linking fields, any data you enter into linked clip fields automatically copies to the source file's XMP metadata. This synchronized information becomes visible in Adobe Bridge, After Effects, and other applications that read XMP metadata.

Tip

To remove a link, select the chain icon button again. The connection breaks immediately, but previously synchronized data remains in both the clip field and XMP metadata field.
