Freeze a frame for a portion of a clip using Time Remapping

Last updated on Apr 2, 2026

Learn how to use Time Remapping in Adobe Premiere to hold a single frame within a clip in the Timeline.

Freezing a frame inside a clip lets you pause the action without cutting the clip apart. This is useful when you want to emphasize a moment, add text over a paused shot, create a dramatic beat, or build a stylized speed ramp effect.

Using Time Remapping, you can create a hold segment directly in the timeline. Instead of creating a separate still frame, you control the freeze using speed keyframes, keeping your edit flexible and non-destructive.

In the Timeline panel, locate the clip you want to modify.

Select the Show Clip Keyframes button (the   badge) on the clip, and select Time Remapping > Speed.

Move the playhead to the frame where you want the freeze to begin.

On the rubber band (speed line) across the clip, Ctrl+click (Windows) or Command-click (macOS) to add a speed keyframe.

Drag the keyframe downward until the speed reads 0%. This creates a freeze at that frame.

Ctrl+Alt-drag (Windows) or Option+Command-drag (macOS) the keyframe horizontally to extend the hold. The flat section of the rubber band indicates the frozen portion of the clip. The frame remains frozen for the duration of the flat (0%) segment.
